Although graduating as an Illustrator at LUCA School of Arts, Gent in 2013 Nina Van Denbempt (°1989 in Halle) works with
mixed media. Whether it is painting, painting over old paintings, redesigning jackets, collecting old paper, writing,
sculpture, building a shrine at home, playing music, making performances with friends or drawing short comics…
It's all in the purpose of trying to keep a naive curiosity in ways of expressing oneself combined with a mild obsession
with the uncomfortableness of being a human in the world. She’s always looking for ways to enhance connection by
sharing personal stu as an antidote for irony and as a way to personally break free from the numbing e FFects of fear and
shame.
Recurring themes as anxiety, failure, shame, crushes, existential dread, loneliness, mental health and feminism are very
close to her being and are a part of processing her own life events. Mix a deep love for DIY, glitters and pop culture with
some darkness and depression and there you have it.

Hoewel ze afstudeerde als Illustrator aan de LUCA School of Arts, werkt Nina Van Denbempt (°1989 in Halle) in 2013 in
Gent met mixed media. Of het nu gaat om het schilderen, het overschilderen van oude schilderijen, het herontwerpen
van jassen, het verzamelen van oud papier, het schrijven, het beeldhouwen van een schrijn thuis, het spelen van muziek,
het maken van performances met vrienden of het tekenen van korte stripverhalen...
Het is allemaal bedoeld om te proberen een naïeve nieuwsgierigheid te behouden in de manier waarop men zich
uitdrukt, gecombineerd met een milde obsessie voor het ongemakkelijke van het mens-zijn in de wereld. Ze is altijd op
zoek naar manieren om de band te versterken door persoonlijke dingen te delen als tegengif voor ironie en als een
manier om zich persoonlijk te bevrijden van de verdovende e ecten van angst en schaamte.
Terugkerende thema's als angst, falen, schaamte, verpletterdheid, existentiële angst, eenzaamheid, geestelijke gezondheid
en feminisme staan dicht bij haar wezen en zijn een onderdeel van de verwerking van haar eigen levensgebeurtenissen.
Meng een diepe liefde voor DIY, glitters en popcultuur met wat duisternis en depressie en daar heb je het.
