ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

This exhibition attempts to portray “artistry” in a refreshing
light; giving examples of this multifaceted activity. It takes
us back to a time when there was no distinction between
so-called “higher” or “lower” art. In essence, everything
was/is decorative and its manufacturability was/is central.
This is the core idea in which this two-fold is being
sought. As well as in her power, her beauty and in all of
its intimacy.
Under the title Avant La Lettre, un dialogue sans mots
entre trois, a duo of designers/artists and an artist “pur
sang” are brought together. With this collaboration, we
discover how diverse the practices truly are, yet at the
same time interchangeable. Other characteristics rise:
they express their unconditional love for the past, one
goes back to the raw material of textiles, one to the very
first forms of technology that requires a decent amount of
knowledge. The other brings the technique of mosaic in
the picture: little coloured stones that are being moulded
together until an image becomes visible. Both techniques
surprise the spectator by challenging him in how the
distance of looking can alter how we perceive objects.
The image appears from a distance, yet becomes
abstract as we approach it. Another notable fact is the
complexity of the process and the amount of invisible
labour behind the scenes: Les Monseigneurs draw
their weaves themselves, replace bobbins and colours
manually. A lot of effort is being put into the finishing of
the tapestries by sewing and hemming.
Damien De Lepeleire departs from an archive of
newspapers, magazines and artbooks. He makes small
cut-outs which he patiently applies on a canvas with glue.
These collage paintings fascinate through their simplicity,
while retaining a power to activate the past. What makes
this exhibition one of a kind, is that each piece : the
tapestries from Les Monseigneurs, the collage paintings
of Damien De Lepeleire and the edition of Willem Boel
are all unique.

OVER DE TENTOONSTELLING

Deze tentoonstelling plaatst het kunstenaarschap in een
verfrissend licht en geeft een beeld van haar veelzijdige
activiteit. Het werpt ons terug in hoe er vroeger geen
onderscheid werd gemaakt in de zogenoemde hogere
als lagere kunsten. In wezen was/is alles decoratief
en stond/staat de maakbaarheid centraal. Het is deze
kerngedachte die de tweespraak opzoekt, zowel in haar
vermogen, haar schoonheid en in al haar intimiteit.
Onder de titel Avant la lettre, un dialogue sans mots
entre trois worden een duo ontwerpers/kunstenaars
samengebracht met een kunstenaar pur sang. Hierbij
stelt zich de vraag in hoe divers beide praktijken zich
verhouden dan wel evengoed inwisselbaar zijn. Naast
dit gegeven dienen nog een aantal kenmerkende
eigenschappen zich voor. Zo drukken ze hun
onvoorwaardelijke liefde uit voor het verleden. De
een gaat terug naar de grondstof textiel, een van de
allereerste vormen van technologie die bovendien veel
kennis veronderstelt. De ander brengt de techniek
van de mozaïek onder de aandacht: kleine vierkantige
gekleurde steentjes die worden geschikt tot een
afbeelding zichtbaar wordt. Beide technieken verrassen
door de kijker uit te dagen in hoe bepalend de afstand
van het kijken kan worden. Zo verschijnt vanop afstand
een afbeelding die wint aan figuratie terwijl van nabij de
abstractie toeneemt. Een ander kenmerkend feit is de
complexiteit van het proces waarbij heel wat onzichtbare
arbeid verscholen ligt: zo tekenen Les Monseigneurs
zelf de bindingen, wordt de spoel bij interventies tijdens
het weven handmatig aangebracht en is er nog heel
wat aan inspanning te verlenen eigen aan de afwerking
bij het naaien en het omzomen van de wandtapijten.
Damien De Lepeleire vertrekt vanuit een archief van
kranten, tijdschriften en kunstboeken waaruit hij kleine
uitsnijdingen geduldig aanbrengt met lijm op doek. Deze
collage-schilderijen fascineren door hun eenvoud en zijn
tegelijk begeesterd door hun inherente kracht in hoe het
verleden wordt geactiveerd. Wat deze tentoonstelling
bovendien ook zo bijzonder maakt is dat zowel de
wandtapijten van Les Monseigneurs, de collageschilderijen
van Damien De Lepeleire alsook de editie
van Willem Boel het telkens om een pièce unique gaat.
